THEORIES
PLOT
- The film is adapted from Tim Krabbé's own novella "The Golden Egg" (Het Gouden Ei), with Krabbé co-writing the screenplay alongside director George Sluizer.
- Johanna ter Steege made her feature film debut as Saskia and won the inaugural European Felix Award (now the European Film Award) in Berlin in 1988 for the performance.
- Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu reportedly built his performance as Raymond by studying real-life psychopaths, and by most accounts his intensity carried off-camera too: co-star Gene Bervoets said Donnadieu ran the set "like a dictator," and ter Steege has said in later interviews she clashed with him and nearly walked off the production before Sluizer intervened.
- George Sluizer directed the 1993 American remake himself, but 20th Century Fox forced a rewrite of the devastating ending after bad test screenings -- reportedly on the order of Rupert Murdoch, who said "serial killers must die, it is a Hollywood law." The remake starred Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland, and Sandra Bullock; Gene Hackman was never attached to the project.
- Spoorloos was a Dutch-French-West German co-production, shot largely on location in Nimes, France.
