The Whip and the Body

• Mario Bava directed under the pseudonym "John M. Old." Producer Luciano Martino asked him to pick "an old American name" so Italian audiences would think the film was a Hammer or AIP production — Bava took the joke literally.
• Christopher Lee never actually dubbed his own voice for the film. He'd already left for home by the time the English dub was recorded, so actor William Kiehl looped his lines instead — Lee reportedly regretted it enough that he insisted on doing his own dubbing on every film afterward.
• Italian authorities seized the film on obscenity charges on October 12, 1963, and international distributors cut it further still. The U.S. release (retitled "What!") trimmed roughly 14 minutes, stripping out nearly all the whipping and S&M content.
• The film went out under a pile of different titles depending on the market: "What!" in the U.S., "Night Is the Phantom" in the U.K., and also "Son of Satan" and "The Whip and the Flesh" on various other releases.
• Bava lit the film with saturated colored gels — blues, greens, reds, pinks — layered over deep shadow instead of natural light, a technique that built the hallucinatory mood while also masking how cheap the castle sets actually were.

The ghost of Kurt never actually returns; the entire supernatural sequence is a projection of Nevenka's repressed libido and guilt, manifesting physically only when she consciously desires punishment.

Kurt's return is a collective hallucination induced by the family's shared trauma and the oppressive, decaying atmosphere of the castle, suggesting the house itself is the true antagonist consuming their minds.

The whip serves as a phallic substitute for the absent brother, implying that Nevenka's mourning process has twisted into a necrophilic fantasy where death becomes the only viable form of intimacy.

Return to the storm-lashed Menliff Castle, where sadist Kurt Menliff is murdered and buried — only for his ghost, or something wearing his face, to keep coming back for his brother's wife and former lover, Nevenka. This isn't a simple ghost story; it's a psychosexual nightmare where grief curdles into masochistic desire. Bava drenches the screen in saturated colored light and velvet shadow as Nevenka invites the phantom's lash, blurring the line between spectral vengeance and hallucinated guilt. The whip cracks not just on flesh, but on the sanity of the living, proving that in Bava's world, the dead demand payment in blood and pleasure.
