Thirst

• Park Chan-wook first pitched Song Kang-ho a vampire-priest idea as far back as their 2000 collaboration on Joint Security Area -- the project gestated for years, developed alongside co-writer Chung Seo-kyung, before it finally became Thirst.
• The screenplay is a loose adaptation of Emile Zola's 1867 novel Therese Raquin, transplanting its story of an adulterous affair and murderous guilt into modern Korea with vampire mythology grafted on.
• Thirst won the Jury Prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, where it also competed for the Palme d'Or -- Park's second Cannes honor after Oldboy took the Grand Prix in 2004.
• Despite South Korea's restrictive 18+ rating for violence and sexuality, the film opened at number one domestically and drew more than 2.2 million admissions, landing among the year's ten highest-grossing releases.
• Park leaned on practical technique -- wirework for the vampire's inhuman leaps, tactile makeup and blood effects -- blended with digital touches rather than heavy CGI for the transformation and violence.

Sang-hyun's vampirism is not a supernatural infection but a physical manifestation of his repressed desires; the virus merely removes the moral inhibitions he cultivated as a priest, revealing that the monster was always inside the man of God.

Tae-ju is the true predator of the pair, using Sang-hyun's condition as a tool to escape her suffocating domestic prison, suggesting her transformation into a vampire is an act of liberation rather than corruption.

The recurring imagery of water and drowning symbolizes a failed baptism; every time Sang-hyun drinks blood, he is ironically re-baptized into a new, damned religion where consumption replaces communion.

Priest Sang-hyun survives a volunteer vaccine experiment gone wrong, trading his near-fatal infection for an insatiable craving for blood and sunlight-induced burns. His spiritual crisis explodes when he begins an affair with Tae-ju, the browbeaten wife of his sickly childhood friend Kang-woo, trapped in a house ruled by her domineering mother-in-law. Together, they descend into a hedonistic spiral of murder and bloodlust, transforming a quiet Korean household into a slaughterhouse. Park Chan-wook strips the romance from the myth, leaving only the grotesque mechanics of addiction and the terrifying freedom of having nothing left to lose.
