TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • The film ran on a shoestring budget of roughly $3.5 million, most of which went into creating the trolls themselves rather than sets or stunts.
  • Director André Øvredal cast Otto Jespersen, a Norwegian comedian famous (and notorious) for provocative political and religious satire -- including a 2002 monologue about the Prime Minister that drew death threats and a 2008 bit that sparked accusations of anti-Semitism -- to give Hans a weary, authentic edge.
  • The trolls are primarily CGI, built by Storm Studios (using Maya and ZBrush, with fur systems running one to two million hair strands per creature) and designed after the troll illustrations of Norwegian artists Theodor Kittelsen and John Bauer; practical effects were used mainly for physical interaction, like a bridge's boards creaking under a troll's weight.
  • The film's final scene uses real archival footage of then-Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg discussing an actual offshore gas field called "Troll" -- re-edited so it plays like the Prime Minister is obliquely confirming trolls are real.
