THEORIES
PLOT
- Made on a shoestring budget of roughly ₹50 lakh and pulling in around ₹2.5 crore at the box office, Veerana became the highest-grossing film in the Ramsay Brothers' entire catalog.
- The film was actually shot around 1985, but Indian censors sat on it for nearly three years — demanding dozens of cuts (reports cite as many as 46 cuts and close to 700 feet of footage) over its mix of horror and sexual content — before it finally opened in May 1988 with an adults-only 'A' certificate.
- Lead actress Jasmin's witch transformation was built with practical prosthetics, latex, and makeup instead of optical tricks, including striking emerald-green contact lenses used to signal her possessed state.
- Veerana was the Ramsay Brothers' first film centered on a female monster, a shift from their earlier male-monster movies that helped set the template other Bollywood supernatural-possession horror films later followed.
- Composer Bappi Lahiri layered synthesizers with traditional Indian instrumentation for the score, a fairly novel move for Hindi horror scoring at the time.
