PLOT
- Videodrome's actual budget was about $5.9 million (roughly $5,952,000), not $2.4 million as often misremembered — and it only clawed back about $2.1 million at the box office, a genuine flop on release.
- Debbie Harry didn't come to the role with "no prior acting training" — Cronenberg cast her as Nicki Brand after watching her in the 1980 neo-noir Union City and auditioning her in Toronto. She called the part, her biggest to that point, a stretch that left her feeling "way over her head" at times.
- The pulsating "breathing television" effect wasn't built from latex and air pumps — Rick Baker's team stretched dental dam material over the screen and rear-projected Nicki's footage onto it, so the image billowed along with the material as it was touched.
- The uncut version drew an X rating from the MPAA; Universal trimmed several shots (including a longer Videodrome broadcast insert and an extended ear-piercing scene) to secure an R rating for theatrical release, with the cut footage later restored on home video.
- Despite bombing in theaters, Videodrome has since become a cult classic, cited as one of Cronenberg's defining body-horror statements on media and technology.
