Visiting Hours

• Visiting Hours made the UK's infamous DPP "video nasty" list during the early-1980s obscenity panic. It was part of the so-called "Dropped 33" — titles targeted for prosecution under the Obscene Publications Act whose cases were later dropped rather than pursued to trial. The film was still cut for its UK cinema and video releases and wasn't passed fully uncut in Britain until 2017.
• The hospital scenes weren't shot at Montreal's Saint-Luc — the production used the real (since-closed) Veterans Hospital in Senneville, Quebec, on Montreal's West Island, for its corridors and wards.
• Michael Ironside's noticeable limp in the back half of the film isn't a performance choice — he broke his ankle on the first day of shooting and worked through it for the rest of the production.
• The film's special makeup effects were created by Stephan Dupuis and Michele Burke, both of whom went on to long genre-effects careers (Dupuis later won an Oscar for The Fly).
• Lee Grant, who plays journalist Deborah Ballin, had already won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Shampoo (1975) — a prestige credential unusual for a Canadian slasher cast. William Shatner co-stars as Gary Baylor, her television station boss.

Colt Hawker represents the ultimate consequence of media desensitization; his obsession isn't just psychological but a literal manifestation of the violence Deborah broadcasts, suggesting she is complicit in creating her own attacker.

The hospital setting functions as a purgatory where Deborah must atone for her career's exploitation of tragedy; every staff member killed is a proxy for the victims she ignored on air, forcing her to face death without a camera buffer.

Colt's ability to bypass security and change costumes effortlessly implies he is not a single man but an omnipresent force of chaos, suggesting the entire siege might be Deborah's hallucination induced by trauma and medication.

After TV journalist Deborah Ballin is brutally attacked in her own home by Colt Hawker — a woman-hating psychopath set off by her on-air stance defending an abused woman who fought back — she expects the hospital to be a safe harbor while she recovers. Instead, the hospital becomes a slaughterhouse when Colt talks and costume-changes his way past security, cycling through disguises as an orderly, a nurse, and even a surgeon to get back to his target. As the body count climbs among staff and patients, Deborah realizes hospital security and the police can't protect her and that the building itself is a locked cage. With nowhere left to run, she has to turn the sterile corridors into her own weapon against a killer who treats murder like a twisted game of hide-and-seek.
