PLOT
  • Alexander Granach — who played the creepy Renfield stand-in in Nosferatu (1922) — plays the mysterious traveling 'Shadowplayer' here, reuniting with fellow Nosferatu alum Gustav von Wangenheim, who plays one of the wife's suitors.
  • Producer Albin Grau, the occult-obsessed mastermind behind Nosferatu, wrote the story and designed this film through his new company Pan-Film — started after Nosferatu's original outfit got sued into the ground by Bram Stoker's widow. Grau even brought over Nosferatu's cameraman, Fritz Arno Wagner, to shoot it.
  • Director Arthur Robison shot the picture with zero title cards, a stripped-down bet on pure visual storytelling — the German intertitles that show up in most surviving prints were bolted on later by a distributor.
  • German censors passed the film on July 19, 1923, despite a shadow-play sequence loaded with bondage and implied sexual violence — risque stuff for the era, in the tradition of early Weimar 'exploitation' cinema.
  • Keep an eye on the Shadowplayer's vest: when he asks the servant for a sheet to rig his show, a middle button on the left side pops off — and then it's mysteriously back in place for the rest of the picture.
