What's the Matter with Helen?

• Debbie Reynolds took no salary for the film - she owed a producing favor from an earlier NBC deal and chose this project because she loved Henry Farrell's script.
• Shelley Winters agreed to play Helen without reading the finished script. Reynolds later said Winters' own psychiatrist had advised against playing a woman having a nervous breakdown because Winters was having one herself at the time.

In 1930s Hollywood, Adelle Bruckner and Helen Hill flee their Midwest hometown under new names after their teenage sons are convicted of murdering a young woman. Adelle throws herself into reinvention, opening a dance-and-dramatics school for stage-mother hopefuls and falling for the wealthy father of one of her students. Helen can't outrun the guilt - she's convinced someone is coming to punish them for what their sons did, and clings to Adelle with a jealous, suffocating devotion that only deepens as Adelle pulls away. As Adelle chases a new life (and takes comfort from a flamboyant radio evangelist's astrology readings), Helen's paranoia curdles into full psychosis. She slaughters the pet rabbits kept behind the school, and in the finale kills Adelle and props her corpse up on the school's stage in costume, playing the piano to an empty room.
