THEORIES
PLOT
- The film's terrifying opening 20 minutes began life as 'The Sitter,' a 1977 short film director Fred Walton shot on 35mm for about $12,000 — its success on a double bill with 'Looking for Mr. Goodbar' landed him the deal to expand it into the feature.
- Made for roughly $1.5 million, the film grossed over $20 million at the box office and climbed to the #1 spot on Variety's weekly chart in its third week of release.
- Tony Beckley, who played killer Curt Duncan, was terminally ill with cancer during filming — it was his final role. He died in April 1980, six months after the movie's premiere.
- The babysitter-in-danger premise draws on the real, still-unsolved 1950 murder of 13-year-old babysitter Janett Christman in Columbia, Missouri, which also spawned the 'the call is coming from inside the house' urban legend.
- Charles Durning plays John Clifford, the private investigator (and former detective) hired to track down the killer after his escape years later — not the killer himself, a mix-up some retrospectives get wrong.
