PLOT
- Whispering Corridors launched the "Yeogo goedam" ("Girls' High School Ghost Story") franchise. Five sequels followed with no shared characters or continuous plot: Memento Mori (1999), Wishing Stairs (2003), Voice (2005), A Blood Pledge (2009), and The Humming (2021).
- It was made by indie studio Cine 2000 on roughly a $600,000 budget and completed in just 28 camera setups — a shoestring shoot even by late-'90s Korean genre-film standards.
- It was a surprise box-office hit: over 620,000 tickets sold in Seoul alone, landing among the year's top-grossing domestic releases in South Korea and helping open the door for the K-horror wave that followed.
- The film carries an implied queer subtext between two of its central female characters, a thread its 1999 sequel Memento Mori pushed further, becoming one of the first mainstream Korean films built around a lesbian relationship.
- Jin-ju's death is officially ruled a suicide by the school, but the film reveals it was actually a storeroom accident involving a falling statue and scattered sculpting tools — the cover-up, not the death itself, is what her ghost is really avenging.
