White Zombie

• Shot in just eleven days in March 1932 on a shoestring budget of roughly $50,000, filmed at the Universal lot, RKO-Pathé, and Bronson Canyon.
• Bela Lugosi took a flat fee of around $800 to play Murder Legendre, turning down a cut of the profits — a decision he reportedly regretted once the low-budget independent picture turned a solid profit.
• To stretch the tiny budget, the crew borrowed standing sets and props from other pictures: the great hall from Dracula (1931), corridors from Frankenstein (1931), and a balcony from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) at Universal, plus sets from King of Kings (1927) at RKO-Pathé for Legendre's castle interior.
• The screenplay, credited to Garnett Weston, was drawn from William Seabrook's 1929 nonfiction book 'The Magic Island' rather than any licensed source — playwright Kenneth Webb, whose Broadway play 'Zombie' predated the film, sued the Halperin brothers for copyright infringement and lost.
• White Zombie is widely regarded as the first feature-length zombie movie, planting the shambling, will-less slave archetype decades before Romero's flesh-eating dead redefined the genre.

Legendre is not a supernatural entity but a drug lord using tetrodotoxin poisoning to simulate death, grounding the horror in colonial exploitation rather than magical realism.

Madeline Short and her fiancé Neil Parker travel to Haiti to marry at the estate of their host, sugar plantation owner Charles Beaumont — but Beaumont is obsessed with Madeline himself and strikes a bargain with voodoo master Murder Legendre, whose zombie slaves work his mill, for a potion that will make her his. Legendre poisons her the night of the wedding; she collapses, is pronounced dead, and buried — only to be dug up and revived as a hollow-eyed zombie under Legendre's control. When Beaumont recoils from the will-less thing he's created, Legendre turns on him too, drugging him and claiming Madeline for himself. Neil, aided by missionary Dr. Bruner, storms Legendre's cliffside castle to break the spell, in a gothic nightmare of control and possession where the living dead shuffle in silent rows under the moonlight.
