Who Can Kill a Child?

The children aren't supernatural -- they're a hive-mind manifestation of collective human guilt, acting out the violence adults have historically inflicted on the young and turning the island into a purgatorial courtroom.

The film's ending makes the point without a line of dialogue: Evelyn's own unborn baby turns on her from inside the womb, and Tom is shot dead by a patrol officer who assumes he's the one doing the killing. The 'infection' isn't something these kids catch -- it's inherited before birth, which is why running, hiding, or reasoning with them was always going to fail.

The whole ordeal plays as a heatstroke or sun-poisoning hallucination, with the children standing in for Tom's repressed rage against the weight of fatherhood and the pregnancy he never fully wanted.

British couple Tom and Evelyn escape to Almanzora — a speck of an island off the Spanish coast — for one last quiet getaway before Evelyn gives birth to their third child. What they find instead is a ghost town run by a swarm of smiling, silent children who've already slaughtered every adult in sight. With no working phone and no way off, the "vacation" curdles into a desperate fight for survival where innocence is the deadliest weapon and hesitation is a fatal mistake.
