TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • The film opens with roughly seven minutes of real archival war footage -- Auschwitz, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the India-Pakistan partition conflict, the Biafran famine -- laying out decades of children as collateral damage before a single frame of the story starts.
  • It's been released under a pile of different titles depending on the market: 'Island of the Damned' in the U.S., 'Death Is Child's Play' and 'Would You Kill a Child?' in the UK, plus a 1979 UK re-release retitled 'Island of Death.'
  • The screenplay is credited to 'Luis Peñafiel' -- a pen name director Narciso 'Chicho' Ibáñez Serrador used on himself -- adapting Juan José Plans' novel 'El juego de los niños' ('The Children's Game').
  • Serrador built the fictional island of Almanzora out of real Spanish locations: coastal exteriors shot in Sitges and Menorca, cut together with inland village scenes filmed in Ciruelos, more than 250 miles from the sea.
  • Serrador -- who also created Spain's horror TV anthology 'Historias para no dormir' and directed 'The House That Screamed' (1969) -- is cited by later Spanish filmmakers like J.A. Bayona and Alejandro Amenábar as a formative influence.
  • It got a low-budget American remake in 2012, 'Come Out and Play,' relocated to Mexico -- it followed the original almost beat for beat and bombed hard at the box office.
