TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • Wild Zero was filmed entirely in Thailand during 1998, standing in for its Japanese setting, and used real Thai army soldiers and their families as the zombie extras.
  • The film had its international breakout as part of the Midnight Madness lineup at the 2000 Toronto International Film Festival, following its Japanese theatrical release on August 8, 1999.
  • In the climax, Guitar Wolf frontman Seiji's guitar conceals a katana in its neck, which he uses to cut the invading alien mothership in half; earlier scenes have him throwing 'laser' guitar picks and firing a shotgun at the zombie horde.
  • The film's love story between Ace and gas-station worker Tobio (played by Kwancharu Shitichai), a transgender character treated with unusual sincerity, is frequently cited by critics as remarkably progressive for a 1999 genre comedy.
  • Synapse Films brought Wild Zero to North American DVD on October 28, 2003, with extras including a Guitar Wolf music video and an interactive drinking game, a release credited with cementing its U.S. cult following.
