• Made on a shoestring budget of under £100,000, largely financed by AIP (Vincent Price's American backers) and producer Philip Waddilove — shot on location across Suffolk and Norfolk on a tight schedule to beat the onset of winter weather.
• Vincent Price and 24-year-old director Michael Reeves clashed constantly on set — Reeves pushed him to drop the campy delivery and play it restrained, a fight most critics credit for the career-best, menacing performance Price gives.
• The BBFC gave the film an X certificate and forced roughly 90 seconds of cuts before UK release — trims to the knife-prickings, a cellar beating, a ducking scene, a woman burned alive, and the climactic axe blows. The full uncut version wasn't restored until 1995.
• American International Pictures retitled the U.S. release 'The Conqueror Worm' and bookended it with Vincent Price narrating Edgar Allan Poe's poem of the same name — pure marketing, since the story has nothing to do with Poe or AIP's earlier Corman-directed Poe cycle.
• The infamous ending — Marshall hacking Hopkins apart with an axe while a soldier shoots him dead — happened partly by accident: the script called for both men to be shot, but the flintlock pistol on set only fired once, forcing Reeves to improvise the axe finale on the spot.
• Reeves died less than a year after the film's release, on February 11, 1969, at age 25, from an accidental overdose of alcohol and barbiturates he'd been taking for insomnia.

Marshall's quest for vengeance mirrors Hopkins' own crusade, suggesting the soldier becomes the very monster he hunts by the time he reaches the final confrontation.

The recurring imagery of horses struggling in mud symbolizes England itself, bogged down and suffocating under the weight of religious fanaticism and civil strife.

Matthew Hopkins sells his soul to the devil by selling damnation to others. Posing as a witchfinder, he drags East Anglia through mud and blood, extracting confessions with thumbscrews and pricking irons. When he tortures and executes Sara's uncle — the village priest who'd just blessed her engagement to soldier Richard Marshall — Marshall abandons the Civil War to hunt the torturer down. This isn't a battle of good versus evil; it's a collision of two dark forces. Reeves strips away the gothic romance, leaving only the stench of wet wool, rusted iron, and an England rotting from the inside out.
