PLOT
  • The project actually began years earlier as an unfinished Guru Dutt production called "Raaz." It was shelved mid-shoot, and Raj Khosla — Dutt's former assistant director — revived it from scratch with a new screenplay by Dhruva Chatterjee.
  • The haunting theme song "Naina Barse Rim Jhim Rim Jhim" was actually composed by Madan Mohan back in 1952, over a decade before the film existed — no director had a scene that fit it until Raj Khosla found it perfect for this story.
  • When the crew shot the "Naina Barse" sequence on location in Shimla, Lata Mangeshkar wasn't available to record in time, so Madan Mohan sang a guide vocal himself and Sadhana lip-synced to the composer's own voice on set; Lata's studio vocal was dubbed in afterward.
  • Cinematographer K.H. Kapadia won the Filmfare Award for Best Cinematography (Black & White) for the film, which also picked up nominations for Best Actress (Sadhana) and Best Music Director (Madan Mohan).
  • Producer N.N. Sippy was initially reluctant to fund location shooting; Raj Khosla talked him into sending the unit to Shimla specifically to capture the snow-laden atmosphere used in the film's climactic stretch.
