Yotsuya Kaidan

• This isn't a solo ghost story — the Japanese title, Chushingura Gaiden: Yotsuya Kaidan, tells you Fukasaku spliced the Yotsuya Kaidan legend directly onto Japan's other iconic revenge tale, the 47 Ronin.
• Shochiku made it to celebrate the studio's 100th anniversary. It started as a straight 47 Ronin picture, but when rival studio Toho beat them to that story with a Kon Ichikawa-directed, Ken Takakura-led version, Fukasaku signed on only if he could fold in the Yotsuya Kaidan ghost story he'd wanted to make for years.
• Both samurai epics opened in Japanese theaters on the same day, October 22, 1994. Fukasaku's version got strong reviews but lost the box office fight to Toho's.
• Koichi Sato stars as the treacherous Iemon, with Saki Takaoka as Oiwa. It's a full 105-minute theatrical feature, not a TV movie, and it played the festival circuit.
• The ghost effects in the climax were built with motion-control ('computer-controlled') camera rigs rather than digital effects, practical in-camera trickery layered with a watery filter for the final haunting.

Oiwa's ghost is not a separate entity but a psychological fracture within Iemon's mind, with each supernatural manifestation representing a specific stage of his unraveling sanity rather than actual spirits.

The recurring motif of distorted reflections suggests the entire second half of the film takes place in a purgatorial loop where Iemon is forced to relive his crime eternally, unable to die until he accepts his guilt.

The rich family Iemon marries into is complicit in the haunting, using local folklore and poison to manipulate him into madness, making the 'ghost' a cover for a calculated human conspiracy.

Fukasaku strips the kabuki stylization down to raw, bloody revenge as Oiwa's ghost warps reality around Iemon, turning his world into a waking nightmare, while his own former comrades in the Asano clan hunt him down and kill him for the betrayal before the vendetta even reaches its target. Iemon ends up walking the earth as a ghost himself, watching beside Oiwa's spirit as the 47 loyal ronin storm Kira's mansion for the real historical revenge raid — two of Japan's biggest legends colliding in one bloody, supernatural payoff no other Yotsuya Kaidan movie attempts. This isn't a tragic romance; it's a brutal excavation of guilt where the supernatural acts as a mirror for human depravity.
