Iron Rose

• Rollin shot the film almost entirely inside a single real graveyard, the Cimetiere de la Madeleine in Amiens, using the actual labyrinth of tombs to trap his two leads.
• It was a commercial disaster. Rollin had largely self-funded it knowing it wouldn't sell, and its failure pushed him into directing pornography to bankroll his later horror features.
• The script grew out of the morbid poetry of Tristan Corbiere, with Rollin co-writing alongside Maurice Lemaitre rather than building from a conventional horror premise.
• Rollin loaded the cemetery with cameos nodding to his earlier Requiem for a Vampire, including a vampire and a clown laying flowers on a grave.
• Mauritius-born actress Francoise Pascal carries nearly the entire film as the nameless woman, her arc sliding from terror to calm to manic elation as she embraces the dead; she reportedly turned down a Kirk Douglas project to take the role.
• It was jeered by a hostile crowd at the 1973 Paris International Festival of Fantastic and Science-Fiction Film, yet Rollin always called it his most personal film and one he loved despite the failure.

The cemetery isn't a trap, it's a conversion. The woman's shift from screaming panic to serene, almost ecstatic acceptance reads less like a breakdown than an initiation. The graveyard chooses her, and her final state isn't madness but communion with the dead she always romanticized.

The whole night may be a death already underway. The lovemaking in the crypt functions as the turning point, after which the couple can never find an exit and the world contracts to repeating tombs. The endless circling suggests a purgatorial loop rather than a literal locked gate.

The man and the woman are two responses to mortality, not two characters. He stays rational, keeps looking for the way out, and is destroyed by it. She stops resisting and is transfigured. Rollin stacks the deck so that surrender, not struggle, is the only thing the cemetery rewards.

A young couple, drawn together by a shared taste for the morbid, slip away from a wedding party to picnic among the graves. They climb down into a crypt to make love, and by the time they surface the gates are locked and the dark has swallowed the paths. What starts as a romantic dare curdles into a circular nightmare: the cemetery refuses to release them, the headstones repeat, and the woman stops fighting the place and starts belonging to it. Almost plotless, almost wordless, it trades scares for a slow surrender to death itself.
