The Tenant

• Polanski changed the source novel's Russian émigré protagonist into a Polish immigrant when he co-wrote the script — a deliberate personal touch, since Polanski himself was a Polish Jew who survived the Holocaust as a child and spent much of his life as an immigrant abroad.
• The film is the final entry in Polanski's informal 'Apartment Trilogy,' following Repulsion (1965) and Rosemary's Baby (1968), each locating horror in domestic confinement.
• The screenplay was adapted from Roland Topor's 1964 novel 'Le Locataire Chimérique,' co-written by Polanski with his longtime collaborator Gérard Brach.
• The Parisian tenement was built as a full-scale set on a soundstage at Studio Éclair in Épinay-sur-Seine, while exterior street scenes were shot on location at 39 Rue La Bruyère in Paris.
• The film got a hostile reception at its 1976 Cannes Film Festival premiere and drew brutal reviews on release — Roger Ebert called it 'not merely bad, it's an embarrassment' — but it has since been reassessed as one of Polanski's cult classics.

The building is a genuine cult: the neighbors, landlord, and even the café workers are coordinating to break Trelkovsky's psyche and drive him to suicide, replicating whatever ritual claimed the previous tenant. Every odd glance and whispered conversation is real surveillance, not paranoia.

Trelkovsky is already Simone Choule. The film is a loop — he either always was her in some fractured identity crisis, or the apartment itself traps successive tenants into becoming the same person who dies the same death, an endless cycle of replacement and erasure.

There is no conspiracy and no supernatural element. Trelkovsky is experiencing a genuine psychotic break from the opening scene, and the film simply grants us his unreliable perception without ever breaking from his delusional POV. The horror is that we cannot distinguish his illness from reality because the film refuses to give us an outside perspective.

Trelkovsky, a mild-mannered file clerk, rents a Parisian apartment whose previous tenant threw herself from the window. The neighbors want silence. The landlord wants compliance. The city wants him invisible. But the apartment has other plans. As Trelkovsky uncovers the previous tenant's belongings, he starts wearing her clothes, applying her makeup, adopting her mannerisms. Is the building conspiring to remake him into her? Is madness contagious? Polanski himself stars in the lead, directing his own disintegration with the precision of a man who knows exactly how a room can turn hostile.
